Extension Schemas
The following information is simply an example of an extension numbering schema. The advantages of adopting a schema for your company will help you plan call handling and support multiple buildings or locations of operation, and an easy to manage organizational setup across all of your business.
NOTE: You should consider using at least a 4 digit extension number. You may use a 4 or 5 digit extension number. Avoid the reserved number spaces like 411, 611, 911, 933 and special functions. Visit the article reserved number space for more info.
Schema Considerations
Organizationally speaking, you may want to consider your future growth plans, number of buildings, number of locations, etc. when deciding an extension number schema. For example, when you visit a hotel or a hospital, typically the first number represents what floor you need, followed by a room number. You could consider this same type of numbering schema to create your business extensions 1000's for the first location, and 2000's for the 2nd building or location, 3000's for the 3rd location, and so forth.
